HUNDRED FOR SONAL DINUSHA! A wonderful, wonderful effort from the youngster. That's his 3rd Test century in just his fifth appearance in the longest format. Tears of joy in the eyes of his mother, who proudly watches his son make a mark for his country. The appetite for runs and to just stay out there is just amazing from a 25-year-old batter, that too, against a quality bowling lineup. Coming to the ball, this is full and angling into the batter. Sonal flicks it through mid-wicket and hustles back for the second run. Removes his helmet, and he holds his bat aloft to acknowledge the applause from his family, the crowd and his teammates. A knock that will be remembered for a long, long time to come. Sonal becomes the third Sri Lankan batter to score three centuries in a two-Test series. Aravinda de Silva and Kumar Sangakkara are the other two, with Aravinda having achieved the feat twice.

We are back. Weary bodies for India are understandable, having bowled nearly 90 overs in the first innings and having enforced the follow-on, 133 and counting in the second dig. Mohammed Siraj will get the session underway with the ball. ... DAY 5, SESSION 3 ...

The clock is ticking - We have 38 overs left in the day, and a draw looks the most likely result at the moment. Even getting four points from a draw would be quite a result for Sri Lanka, given where they were earlier in the Test. The weather has stayed clear so far, and let’s say it remains that way. Two overs will be lost for the changeover, and even if India have around 190 to chase down in, let’s say, 30 overs, it would be a stretch. The final session of the series will commence at 9.45 am GMT (3.15 pm IST). See you then.

Who would have seen this coming? Starting the day with a 16-run lead and 4 wickets in hand and with India having the second new ball, few would have backed Sri Lanka to make it through two sessions without being bowled out. India made a couple of inroads in the first hour or so after the break, but then ran into the stubborn resistance of Lahiru Kumara, who has repaid the faith shown in him by Sonal Dinusha. Dinusha himself has had to battle cramps and is now closing in on what would be his third century of the series.

9.25 am GMT (2.55 pm IST) - TEA, DAY 5 - Sonal Dinusha walks off to a standing ovation from his teammates and the crowd, and Lahiru Kumara deserves every bit of that applause as well. Another frustrating session for India as Sri Lanka continue to hang in there and, in doing so, have eaten into valuable time.

Magnificent effort! Full in length, Sonal Dinusha fetches the ball from outside off and sweeps it to short fine leg, and this time, they hustle through for a run. And that will be TEA on Day 5!

A bit of yes and no! Full on middle, sliding on with the arm. Sonal sweeps it fine towards the short fine leg fielder and looks to steal a run, but Siraj is quick to attack the ball and scores a direct hit but Sonal retreats back to the batting end just in the nick of time.

FOUR! Splits the gap and moves to 97! Pushed through, full on middle and leg, Sonal Dinusha gets low down on a knee and sweeps it between short fine leg and square leg for a boundary.

Lahiru Kumara needs some medical attention, but the physio is nowhere to be seen. The substitute fielders are ready to come on with the drinks, but have not been allowed onto the field by the umpires.

Not that full, on middle and off, Sonal Dinusha once again employs the reverse sweep to deep backward point and calls his partner through for the second. Jain gets the throw a bit wayward from the stumps, sprints back to gather it, but fumbles and tumbles onto his back as Kumara dives in desperation and almost collides with the bowler.

Looks like the umpires have called for the DRINKS BREAK. India have picked up a couple of wickets after a toil-filled, wicketless morning but Sonal Dinusha continues to be the irritant in India’s side, refusing to let them settle. It still looks like a good batting surface, and it's quite unusual not to see any uneven bounce here. Moreover, India have switched tactics to hunt for wickets, tempting the batters into playing scoring shots, which has in turn forced errors. They would want to get the Sri Lankans bundled out before Tea and come out to chase, which, in all likelihood, would be an intense dash with the weather around as well. Let's see how this phase pans out.

From around the wicket, full and fired in, on middle. Kumara keeps it out off the front foot.

Jadeja, perhaps, expecting the charge, throws it wide, near the tramline, on the shorter side. Sonal hangs back and cuts it to deep point for a run.

OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Prabath Jayasuriya just couldn't resist and fell into the trap. Fizzed through on a fuller length, around the off stump. Prabath Jayasuriya is lured on the front foot and tries to hammer it through cover, but only manages a thick outside edge as the ball turns sharply. Dhruv Jurel has very little time to react, but grabs a fine catch at gully, to his left. Dinusha, at the other end, drops his gloves in frustration as Sri Lanka are 355/8, leading by 142 runs.

Drifts it onto the pads, full in length, clipped through backward square leg for a couple of runs. On the 27th ball, Jayasuriya is finally off the mark.

Gives it a good rip, does Jadeja. Full on middle, Prabath Jayasuriya drives it a bit uppishly towards cover.

Taking a leaf out of Stuart Broad's playbook, Mohammed Siraj switches the bails at the batting end in search of some luck.

Oh, uppish but short! Siraj bashes it short and on the leg stump, around the ribs. It rises at an awkward height at the batter. Sonal Dinusha drags the bat in front by getting up on his toes and looks to block it down the pitch, but ends up fending it off the inside edge and the ball drops to the left of the short leg fielder.

FOUR! In the gap. Krishna bashes the hard length, not much pace off the surface and Dinusha gets the width to free his arms. He hops to get on top of the bounce and cuts it to the right of the man at deep point for a boundary. The last boundary before this came in the 91st over.

A sharp bouncer at the helmet of the batter. Dinusha hurriedly ducks under it.

Goes into the deck, does Prasidh, at the ribs. Dinusha hops and nudges it behind square leg. The square leg fielder moves to his left and cuts it off.

Prasidh Krishna continues. There's a backward short leg in place. Short stuff coming?

Quicker and flatter, on a good length. Sonal gets the reverse away this time and plays it to deep backward point. He keeps the strike with a single. Sri Lanka now lead by 122 runs.

Oh, that could have gone anywhere. Tossed up, around off. Dinusha goes for the reverse but it lands in the rough and spins back in to catch the inside edge onto the pads. It pops up off the front pad but lands safely on the pitch well away from the man at leg gully.

Outside off, on a length. Sonal leans across and defends it.

A bit of air given, full and on off. Dinusha steps out and ends up getting too close to the ball. It grazes the toe end and rolls to leg slip.

Flatter and fractionally short, on off. Dinusha goes deep in the crease to keep it out.

Flighted up, around off. India have kept the field open up on the off side, inviting the drive. Sonal uses his feet and gets to the pitch of the ball. Drives it through covers before Ravindra Jadeja gets around from wide long off and tidies up. There was a third on offer but Sonal wants to keep strike and settles with a couple.

Switches to over the wicket now, on a short of a good length, on off. Dinusha drops his wrists and lets the ball go. It does not rise much and goes on the bounce to the keeper.

Wide. A proper bumper now by Krishna, Sonal ducks. It is deemed too high by the umpire. Prasidh is not happy with the call.

Around the off stump, on a back of a length. Sonal stabs it down from the crease.

Rappped on the pads! No reaction from the bowler but the men behind the bat but seemed interested. The height seemed to be an issue and Shubman Gill opted against the review. Landing around the line of the leg stump, on a good length and it spins away to square Prabath up on his defence before he is pinged on the back thigh. The Ball Tracking confirms that the ball would have gone over the stumps and Suthar felt so too.

After toiling really hard through a fruitless morning, India finally have a breakthrough and the contest is wide open once more. Prabath Jayasuriya is in at number 9. Came in as a nightwatchman in the first dig and went away as a very unhappy man in the closing stages of the second day.

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Early success after the break for India. End of Keshara Nuwantha's resistance. Just before this ball, Pant had asked Suthar to push it through, and the latter obliges. This is angled in on a good length around middle. Nuwantha lunges forward and brings his bat out in front, but he can't get to the pitch of the ball. It straightens off the deck with bounce and takes the shoulder of the blade. The ball lobs towards gully, where Dhruv Jurel gobbles it up. End of a 112-run stand. Sri Lanka are 330/7 with a lead of 117 runs.

The match is delicately poised, and lunch must have tasted all the sweeter for the hosts as the umpires and players make their way back to the middle. Sonal Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha walk to the crease to resume their marathon partnership which is worth 111 runs. Manav Suthar will get us underway with the first over of the second session. So Sri Lanka lead by 116 runs, as India desperately look to break the resistance. Here we go...

Heading towards a Draw? If, and it's a big IF, Sri Lanka can negotiate the afternoon session as well, they will be firmly on course to secure a famous draw here. Should they push their lead past 200, they could even declare and invite India to bat, hoping to bowl them out. However, with rain forecast for the later stages of the day, a draw looks increasingly likely. Even that result would be an honourable one for the hosts, given how deeply they were in trouble after being handed the follow-on. For India, though, it would be a significant dent to their WTC final hopes. Come the second session, they will be eager to wrap up the Sri Lankan innings and set themselves up for a chase. Play is expected to resume at 7.10 am GMT (12.40 pm GMT). Join us then.

Worked hard, but no rewards - India took the second new ball but simply could not trouble the batters with it, and truth be told, neither handled it with much effectiveness nor manufactured even half a chance. In fairness to them, though, they worked extremely hard for it, but the pitch itself has drifted off into a deep slumber, offering precious little even to the spinners. It was indeed striking to see Mohammed Siraj underused, having bowled just 22 overs across both innings. Of the lot, only Jadeja has looked genuinely capable of prising a breakthrough. But nothing to take away from the way these two have batted not only in this match but throughout this series.

Admirable resistance - Sri Lanka kept finding ways to test the patience of the Indians. Dinusha and Nuwantha batted with positive intent and scored at a fair clip, yet married that with real discipline, defending the good ones and leaving what deserved leaving. Fittingly, it was this very duo who had proved just as frustrating for the Indian bowlers in the first innings, through a similarly resolute partnership. Now, they’ve put together an unbeaten 111-run partnership, which also stands as the second-best seventh-wicket stand for Sri Lanka against India in Tests, just behind Hashan Tillakaratne and Thilan Samaraweera’s 194, way back in 2001 at the same venue.

6.34 am GMT (12.04 pm IST) - What a brilliant session for Sri Lanka! The sheer willingness from Dinusha and Nuwantha to simply dig in, block out everything else, and grind through the hard yards is genuinely impressive. More so given how early both still are in their Test careers. The pair has not only worn down the Indian bowlers but have also added exactly 100 runs in 31.2 overs, swelling the lead to 116. India will be thoroughly disappointed with how the session unfolded. Jadeja came agonizingly close to a breakthrough right on the stroke of Lunch, but it was not to be. And the longer the Islanders continue to bat, the more that frustration is only likely to deepen for the visitors.

A bit of turn, slower through the air, outside off, on a length. Nuwantha pads it away, and it brushes the front pad before going towards slip. That will be Lunch on Day 5.

Given LBW but successfully overturned. Drama in the closing stages of the session. Jadeja angles it in from around the wicket, on a good length, outside off. Nuwantha pads it away. A confident shout and the finger is raised, but hang on, Nuwantha has reviewed it. No shot offered by the batter, but did it come back enough? The Ball Tracking shows that the ball did not come back in with the arm and instead straightened a bit to miss the off pole comfortably.

A brief halt in proceedings as Nuwantha looks uncomfortable after copping a blow on the left toe. He removes his pads and also his left boot as the physio applies the magic spray on the bruised area. After a good couple of minutes' break, Keshara is good to go.

A prolonged shout for LBW, but turned down. India's desperation was pretty evident in that appeal. It pitched outside the line of the leg stump and was comfortably missing the stumps. Jadeja spears in a yorker from around the wicket. Nuwantha tries to get his bat out in front but cannot do so in time. Gets pinged on the left toe first, and then the ball hits the bat.

A bit of interest shown by Jadeja but it came off the bat. Flighted delivery, on middle. Sonal leans across to the off side and plays the reverse. It is a bit too full for the shot but he gets it away behind point for a single.

With just around 7 minutes to Lunch, Ravindra Jadeja (26-2-76-1) is back on. Might as well see the seam from the other end.

Dinusha looks to be struggling with some cramps. He limped off while completing the run off the last ball. He gets rid of his gloves and pads and is now down on the ground with the physio out to check him. Meanwhile, the Indian team has huddled up with KL Rahul, the vice-captain, giving a pep talk to his teammates. Shubman Gill is off the field for now and can be seen in the Indian dressing room. Sarfaraz Khan is out as his substitute. Right then, Dinusha is back on his feet. Good to resume with about 18 minutes to Lunch.

Doing too much? Jain gives the ball a bit of air, on a length, on middle and leg. Nuwantha is neither forward nor back and plays all around it to get hit on the front pad. There was no real conviction in the appeal and Jain indicated that it would have spun past the leg stump. The Ball Tracking later shows that the ball was going on to clip the leg pole. It would have been umpire's call.

Padikkal flings himself to his left but cannot get to it, and the ball scoots away toward the deep fine leg fence.

Ravindra Jadeja returns. It has turned cloudy, but nothing threatening at the moment.

FOUR! Pleasing to the eyes! Fuller in length, outside off again. Keshara Nuwantha takes a good stride forward, presents full face of the bat and absolutely creams it through the cover and mid off gap for a cracking boundary. Nuwantha is proving his credentials brilliantly with the bat. A celebrappeal for caught behind. Siraj pleads and keeps pleading but Ahsan Raza is unmoved. Shubman Gill does not immediately but eventually goes upstairs for a review. Has the bat hit the ground? Yes, it has. UltraEdge shows a flat line when the ball is next to the outside edge, but it does show a spike when the ball grazes the ground. Another excellent piece of umpiring from Raza. Coming to the delivery, this is very full and swinging away a bit, outside off. Keshara Nuwantha tries to smash it through covers, but misses as the ball carries through to the keeper. This will only add to India's frustrations this morning.

DRINKS BREAK! This has been a fine showcase of admirable resistance once again from Sonal Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha, who have added 55 to Sri Lanka's overnight total. India might start to get a little frustrated as they haven't been that threatening even with the new ball in this first hour. The lead for Sri Lanka is 71 runs, and they would want to pick at least two or three wickets before Lunch. With that said, Mohammed Siraj is back into the attack, replacing Prasidh Krishna.

Draws the batter forward, does Saransh, fuller in length, on middle. Sonal smothers the spin.

Flat and short, on off. Sonal blocks it off from the crease.

Looped up, around the pads. Nuwantha lunges to tuck it away but is beaten by the turn. The ball pops up off the front pad and lobs over the head of the man at leg slip. They cross.

Slows it down and it is shorter but the line is down leg. Nuwantha misses out on the glance.

Full and speared in on middle. Sonal sweeps it behind square leg and takes a single.

A ripper by Jain. Drifting in, on a good length in line with the off stump. Dinusha brings his bat out in front to block it off. It drops on the batter and spins away sharply past the outside edge, kicking up as well with a puff of dust.

Risky single attempted but Dinusha gets away with it. Fuller and on off. Sonal extends his hands and plays a punchy drive wide of cover before scampering through for a single. Yashasvi Jaiswal picks the ball up cleanly and has a shy at the bowling end but misses as the ball bounces over the stumps. It could have been close had the throw hit.

Prasidh switches to around the wicket and sets the field for the short ball with a short leg and a leg gully in place. This is on a back of a length, on middle. Nuwantha hangs deep in the crease, expecting the short ball. He plays all around it and gets rapped on the pads. Prasidh goes searching for the yorker but ends up dishing out a low full toss, on middle. Nuwantha presents the full face of the bat, and even though the bat turns in his hand, he manages to drive it to the left of mid on and pick up a boundary. Sonal Dinusha applauds from the other end. Sri Lanka's lead is now 63.

Serves it very full, on off. Nuwantha gets his bat down and squeezes it past cover. The new ball skips across the turf before Ravindra Jadeja hunts it down with a slide as the batters pick up a couple.

In conversation with Manav Suthar - Manav says the wicket in Colombo is different from the one in Galle and has presented a different challenge. Feels the Galle surface was supportive for the spinners and the experience has been a good learning opportunity, particularly in adapting to the pace, line and length required here in Colombo. On the wicket of Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Suthar shares that Gill had an inkling Pasindu would step out, so kudos to him for anticipating it. Shares that he went with his instinct and bowled it fuller and wider, which brought the desired result. Manav says he is enjoying Test cricket and feels the team is growing together. Adds that he is happy to be part of that growth and the progress they are making as a team.

PITCH REPORT - Russel Arnold is near the deck, inspecting the Day 5 surface at SSC. Mentions that the weather looks perfect at the moment, and the pitch has certainly evolved over the course of the game. He observes a few cracks visible, but nothing too significant. Believes that if batters trust their defence, they can survive on this surface. Observes a bit of crumbling on a good-length area at one end, but it does not look particularly dangerous. He says that Sri Lanka will be hoping for some help from the weather, but at the moment, there does not seem to be any rain on the horizon to come to their rescue.

Final words before the battle - The Indian team is huddled together, with head coach Gautam Gambhir later seen alongside the captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain KL Rahul, firing up the troops one final time. India still hold a commanding position in this Test, but there is important work left this morning, wrapping up the Sri Lankan innings as swiftly as possible. Sonal Dinusha has been a genuine thorn in their flesh, and dismissing him early will be right at the top of the agenda. A win here would do wonders for their WTC final aspirations too. There is still a long road ahead, and with tougher assignments looming against New Zealand (2 away Tests) and five Tests in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home versus Australia, banking these points now feels essential.

How's the weather? After rain swamped the closing stages of Day 4, conditions have turned wonderfully pleasant this morning. It is bright and sunny over Colombo, the sun very much in its glory, the pitch has been uncovered, and everything points towards a prompt start.

India close in - The visitors were able to stave off the Lankan fightback yesterday and prevent the tide from turning. If the old cherry does not provide the breakthroughs, they will have the second new ball at their disposal, which is 7.2 overs away.

Sonal, the last hope - 57 (137) and 58 (112) - these are the two stands Sonal Dinusha was able to put together in the first innings with Keshara Nuwantha and Lahiru Kumara respectively. Sri Lanka will need another similar rearguard effort if they are to have any chance of avoiding defeat.

Time for the final act - Not many Tests go the distance these days. Some do not even see Day 4, let alone Day 5, and in extreme cases, not even Day 3. But here we are for Day 5 action at the SSC in Colombo, with India eyeing the final push towards the finish line while Sri Lanka are right up against it.

... DAY 5, SESSION 1 ...

We move into the final day - Righto, the rain has forced the game to go into Day 5, and at the moment, India will be pretty confident and look to sweep the series. However, there will be that small part at the backside of their minds that if they don't manage to bowl the Lankans out early on Day 5, it could end in a draw, as there is a forecast for plenty of rain. Well, let's hope that it isn't the rain that has the final say, but rather the players from both sides. Day 5 will commence on Thursday, 27 August at 4.15 am GMT (9.45 am IST), but you can join us sooner for the build-up. Cheers!

India roared back post-Tea - After the wicket of Kamindu Mendis, Sooriyabandara slowed down considerably, but skipper Dhananjaya de Silva looked positive and scored at a decent pace. Soon after Tea, though, Manav Suthar caught a lucky break, and DDS had to walk back. This marked a shift in momentum and Sooriyabandara started to get scratchy, eventually falling on 92, and again, Suthar was the one who did the damage. Sri Lanka were soon reduced to 218/6 in 64.2 overs with plenty of time left in the final session, but Keshara Nuwantha and Sonal Dinusha have dug deep, and Sri Lanka have managed to muster up just 11 more runs in 8.2 overs after that. Still, there's a lot of work to do for Sri Lanka as they are just 16 runs ahead. And if they fail with the bat, they would require at least a couple of sessions to be rained out on the final day to save them from the blushes.

Lanka looked good, but couldn't capitalise - Sri Lanka fought well with the bat on Day 3, and they started Day 4 positively as Sonal Dinusha brought up his second century of the series. However, a false shot from Lahiru Kumara gave India the opening they needed, and the visitors managed to enforce the follow-on. In their second innings, Sri Lanka started with 213 runs behind India and even lost an early wicket. Kamil Mishara and Pasindu Sooriyabandara led the counter-punch with a 58-run stand, but the crucial stand came for the 3rd wicket when Pasindu got together with Kamindu Mendis, and they mustered up 115 runs. At that point, the Indian bowlers looked a bit untidy and Manav Suthar, in particular, was getting attacked with some big shots.

11.21 am GMT (4.51 pm IST) - STUMPS, DAY 4 - The intensity of the rain has increased, and no further play will be possible today. That is that for the day. For the second day running, play has been called off in the second half of the final session. India are in a commanding position, but Sri Lanka still have hope of at least drawing the Test match, although it is more of a sliver.

11.08 am GMT (4.38 pm IST) - It has started to drizzle. Off go the players, and on come the ground staff rushing in with the covers. Most of the Indian players are still in the dugout, while Dhruv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal are taking some time out to sign autographs for the fans. The ground staff continue to bring on more covers as they work to cover the entire ground.

DRINKS BREAK! It has been quite a turnaround since the departure of Kamindu Mendis in the second session. When the partnership between Mendis and Pasindu Sooriyabandara was flourishing, India looked short of answers, but all they needed was one opening. They have since made inroads while keeping the scoring in check. As was the case in the first innings, Sonal Dinusha has once again been left to fight it out with the bowlers. There are 17 overs left in the day, but with dark clouds gathering, it does not look like we will get through all of them. The ground staff are on standby with the covers, but we will carry on for now.

Tossed up fuller on off, Nuwantha leans on to make the block.

Nagging length, slightly into the pitch and turning away. Nuwantha rocks back and dabs it between slip and gully.

The clouds are building up heavily. There's some movement around the boundary ropes from the ground staff as well. Siraj is having a chat with the members of the ground staff, and both parties seem to be enjoying the conversation.

Short and turning back at the hips. Sonal stays back and nurdles it with the spin behind square leg for a run.

Around the pads, full in length. Sonal steps out and flicks it to square leg.

Dropped short by Jadeja, on off. Nuwantha hangs back and punches it wide of backward point. Saransh Jain moves to his right but overruns the ball and slips as well. He manages to stick out the left hand and takes the sting out of the shot. Mohammed Siraj backs Jain up and keeps it down to a single.

OUT! LBW! This looks pretty straight and it has been given by the umpire. Niroshan Dickwella has reviewed it, though. It is the arm ball by Jain from around the wicket, full and landing around off. Dickwella gets half-forward to defend but the ball comes in with the arm to go past the inside edge and he gets hit low on the front pad. After pinging the front pad, the ball made contact with the inside edge, and perhaps that made Niroshan feel that he had gotten an inside edge. There is daylight between the bat and the ball and there is no need for UltraEdge, says the third umpire. Three reds on Ball Tracking with the ball crashing into the leg stump. Saransh Jain strikes on his return to the attack. Sri Lanka are now 218/6, leading by 5 runs.

A loud shout for LBW, but turned down. No reaction from Rishabh Pant but Manav Suthar looked pretty interested. Shubman Gill checks with the keeper and eventually opts against the review. The impact seemed to be outside the line there. Dickwella pre-empts the sweep but the ball is too full for the shot and it sneaks under the blade to catch him on the boot. The Ball Tracking later confirms that the impact was well outside the line.

Halt. The physio is out to attend to Sonal Dinusha, who is getting the index finger of his left hand taped up.

Pasindu Sooriyabandara was 83 (115) at one stage and ended up scoring only 9 more runs in the next 58 balls. Ah, this is what happens when a maiden Test hundred starts getting close enough to smell. Suddenly, every run feels precious, every ball carries a little extra weight, and freedom quietly makes way for caution, overcaution in this case, perhaps.

OUT! STUMPED! Oh, my! That is a brain fade moment from someone who has been so much in control so far and Pasindu Sooriyabandara has only himself to blame. Sooriyabandara is a bit early to come down the track and Manav Suthar sees him coming. Suthar fires it full and wide outside off and Sooriyabandara is well beaten. Rishabh Pant reaches to collect the ball and whips off the bails. Sooriyabandara departs in the 90s and that could be a huge wicket in the context of the game. Also, before this ball, Rishabh Pant was heard on the stump mic alerting the mid-on fielder as he sensed a big shot coming. Pasindu did give the charge for that but got outsmarted by the bowler.

Sooriyabandara was unfazed, and he overturns the LBW call. The arm-ball from Suthar, landing it on off and getting it to dart back in. Pasindu Sooriyabandara goes down for the big sweep but misses and gets hit on the pad. There is a loud appeal for LBW, and up goes the umpire's finger. Pasindu Sooriyabandara reviews it immediately. This could be make-or-break for Sri Lanka. UltraEdge confirms that there is an inside edge and Pasindu survives as the decision is changed to Not Out.

OUT! CAUGHT! A bit unlucky that, and Dhananjaya de Silva is dumbfounded. Manav Suthar pulls the length back, bowling it flatter on off. De Silva presses back to work it on the leg side but does so against the turn. The ball holds its line and catches the inside edge, going on to hit the back leg and then lobs up in front of gully. Devdutt Padikkal lunges to take the catch and another brewing partnership is broken. Suthar has been expensive but gets a crucial wicket, as Sri Lanka still trail by 4 more runs.

A big session awaits - This has been a superb fightback from Sri Lanka with the bat, but there is still plenty left to be done if they are to harbour any hopes of a favourable result. After Mendis departed, Sooriyabandara became noticeably cautious. Whether the approaching Tea break or the prospect of a maiden Test hundred played a part is hard to tell, but Sri Lanka will need him to rediscover his earlier aggression. India have their work cut out with the menace of Sonal Dinusha still to come. They will look to make early inroads in the third session and put a lid on Sri Lanka’s fightback. The action will resume at 9.45 am GMT (3.15 pm IST). Do join us then.

What a difference a session can make - A really productive one for Sri Lanka, and for the first time in this Test, we saw India being put under genuine pressure and looking a little rattled. Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis picked up where they left off before the Lunch break and continued to be proactive against the spinners. Apart from a few heart-in-the-mouth moments in their 115-run stand, the two batters displayed calculated aggression and picked their battles well. The body language suggested the pressure was beginning to tell on the visitors, but removing Mendis allowed India to regain some control in the remainder of the session.

9.27 am GMT (2.57 pm IST) - TEA, DAY 4 - End of an absorbing session, and this Test continues to keep us intrigued. What will happen next remains anyone's guess, but it certainly gives us plenty to look forward to. Sri Lanka scored 116 runs in 34 overs in this extended session, bringing the deficit down to just 14 runs.

Safely negotiated, and that will be Tea on Day 4. Suthar flights it up, landing it on off and middle. Pasindu Sooriyabandara gets forward and blocks it off.
