Ayush Mhatre

Chennai Super Kings
Batsman
Right Handed 18 yrs.

Ayush Yogesh Mhatre, born on July 16, 2007, in Nallasopara, Maharashtra, is a right-handed opening batter and right-arm off-break bowler who has rapidly ascended through the ranks of Mumbai and Indian cricket. His journey is defined by immense personal sacrifice; starting at age five, he eventually transitioned to professional goals at fifteen, famously traveling nearly 80 kilometers one way by train from Virar to practice at Churchgate.

Mhatre’s professional breakthrough arrived in October 2024, when he made his first-class debut for Mumbai at age 17 during the Irani Cup against the Rest of India. He quickly validated his selection by scoring a majestic 176 against Maharashtra in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy. His impact in List A cricket was even more historic. In December 2024, playing only his fifth match, he smashed 181 runs off 117 balls against Nagaland. This performance made him the youngest player ever to score 150 or more runs in a men's senior List A match, surpassing the record previously held by Yashasvi Jaiswal.

The Indian Premier League provided a global platform for Mhatre in 2025. Although he initially went unsold in the auction, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) signed him for 30 lakh as an injury replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad. He made his debut on April 20, 2025, against the Mumbai Indians, scoring 32 off just 15 balls.

His standout performance followed on May 3, 2025, when he hammered 94 runs off 48 balls against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, falling just short of a maiden century. He finished the season with 240 runs at a staggering strike rate of 188.97, earning a reputation as a fearless top-order ‘Gen-Z’ talent.

Mhatre’s international leadership was cemented during the 2025-26 period. After leading the India Under-19 team to successful tours in England and Australia, he was named captain for the 2026 U-19 World Cup in Zimbabwe and Namibia. On February 6, 2026, he led India to a record-extending sixth World Cup title, defeating England in the final. Mhatre enjoyed a productive individual campaign, amassing 214, including half-centuries in the semi-final against Afghanistan and the final against England. He also showcased his all-round capability by taking crucial wickets throughout the tournament, including a match-winning three-wicket haul against Pakistan.

Positioned as a versatile opening option or a number three batter for CSK, Mhatre is regarded as a cornerstone of the franchise’s long-term strategy and a prime candidate for a senior national call-up following his historic Under-19 success.
