Welcome back for the run chase. After a slight delay due to rain, conditions have gotten a lot brighter now, which is a promising sign. The Bangladeshi players spread out to the park. Matthew Short and Cooper Connolly are the two Aussie openers. It will be Taskin Ahmed to open the attack for Bangladesh. Short to take the strike. Here we go again...
... THE RUN CHASE ...
Good news - The rain has stopped. And there is a bit of sunshine coming through the clouds as well. The covers have been peeled off completely now. And the restart is not far away as well. Let's hope the rain stays away for the rest of the evening. Fingers crossed.
9.43 am GMT update - The second inning should have gotten underway by now, but the floodlights are on in Dhaka and just a few minutes back, the umpires were out to inspect the conditions. It seems to have stopped raining, and the main cover is still placed on the pitch. The forecast had warned of rain and thunderstorms during match hours, and it looks like those warnings are coming true. Fingers crossed the conditions clear up enough for a full chase. Stick around for next update.
9.32 am GMT update - Covers are on - It has got dark in Dhaka and there was a bit of rain around as well. However, it was a passing shower and it seems to have stopped raining now. The players can be seen warming up as well. The covers remain firmly placed on the pitch and the square is still protected. But just as things looked like they might get underway, the on-air commentators inform that the drizzle has returned. We wait. Stay tuned for further updates.
A challenging total to chase - FYI, since 2023, no team has been able to score 300 or above in Dhaka in ODIs. But looking at the score that Bangladesh have managed to post on the board, and given Australia's creeping struggles in the subcontinent, this is going to be some challenge for the kangaroos to scale it down. The Bangladeshi bowlers will look to build on what worked in the first innings, pace variations and attacking the stumps chief among them, as they look to keep the pressure on from the first over. Australia on the other hand, will need a steady start and the experienced blokes like Labuschagne and Carey will have to step up to secure the chase. Stay tuned as the run chase is up next shortly.
Mosaddek proves his credentials on ODI return - With two new batters in the middle and the lower order not far away, the situation demanded responsibility. Mosaddek and Hridoy answered that call, putting together a crucial 75-run partnership that steadied the innings when it mattered. Mosaddek took on the aggressor's role and brought up a fine fifty upon his return to the ODI setup, while Hridoy held the other end together with a rather slowish inning. But Hridoy's dismissal triggered another slide, and Mosaddek found himself stranded repeatedly as partners fell around him in the closing overs. Mosaddek batted till the very end, though, and a handy cameo from Taskin Ahmed gave the innings a late boost that helped Bangladesh finish with a strong total on the board.
Control with the ball in the middle phase - Australia read the conditions nicely. They came hard with the pace early, extracting what was on offer, and then seamlessly shifted to spin once the surface began to assist the slower bowlers. Zampa was held back until the 23rd over, as Shanto kept the boundaries coming at regular intervals and also brought up his fifty. However, the tourists controlled that 21-30 over phase, where Australia conceded just 47 runs and picked up a couple of wickets. Zampa had a bit of an off day, but Renshaw in particular was disciplined and tidy, giving Bangladesh very little to free their arms against. The hosts, as has been their vulnerability, lost their way through that phase. Shanto fell for a fine 67, and the innings wobbled. From 106/1, Bangladesh slipped to 140/4.
Positive intent by the top order - The Aussie seamers found early movement under overcast skies, and Ellis made it count, splitting the opening pair inside two overs. After that, Bangladesh took over. Shanto and Tanzid put together a fluent stand, batting with freedom and keeping the scoreboard moving at better than a run a ball throughout. Shanto, reprieved on 9, made the Aussies pay for the let-off, playing with intent and purpose. The bowlers searched for a length, searched for a line, and found neither for long stretches as the partnership flourished. It took Ellis himself to end it, coming back to break a 96-run stand.
A strong finish for the hosts - Bangladesh would definitely be the happier of the two sides heading back in the sheds as they managed to score 70 runs in the last 10 overs. Australia, of all their fielding lapses and not being able to put on a lid in the final overs, would feel a psychological relief to have not led the hosts get past that 300 figure. For Australia, there might be some psychological relief in keeping the hosts below 300, but not much else to smile about. Ellis aside, the bowling lacked the control and penetration needed to put a lid on things late. And the fielding was nothing short of lackadaisical from the Aussies, well below their standards. Innings breakout - Powerplay 1 - Overs 1-10 - 62/1. Powerplay 2 - Overs 11-40 - 152/3. Powerplay 3 - Overs 41-50 - 70/4.

OUT! TAKEN! Liam Scott wraps things up with his second wicket. Bangladesh finish on 284/8. This is a high full toss, outside off, Taskin Ahmed once again throws his bat at it, but it turns in his hands. The ball goes high in the air towards mid off, where Nathan Ellis backtracks nicely, keeps his eyes on the ball and takes a good catch. There is a check for a No Ball, but the replay shows that the ball is well below the waist of the batter, and that will be that for the first innings.
Is that out? The catch has been taken, but the umpires want to check whether the ball is above the waist. The side-on replay confirms that it is dipping well below the waist and is deemed a fair delivery.
WIDE! Attempts the wide yorker, but spills it over the tramline, outside off. Taskin Ahmed swings and misses. He spreads his arms even before the umpire, but gets the call.
Short of a length and around off, takes pace off, Mosaddek Hossain goes through the pull early. It hits the toe-end of the bat and goes towards extra cover for one.
FOUR! This is turning out to be a good over for the hosts! A slower one, full and on middle, Mosaddek Hossain sets himself for the reverse scoop. He gets a top edge that flies over short third. Adam Zampa chases after it but the ball wins the race to the fence.
Another run out chance...missed! Fuller one and around leg, Mosaddek Hossain clips it towards deep backward square leg for a run. Cameron Green is a bit casual with an underarm throw to the keeper. Seeing that, Hossain charges for the second run and Taskin responds again. Inglis once again misses his shy at the batting end and the batter survives.
In the blockhole, around off, Taskin Ahmed swings but gets it from toe-end as the ball bounces to the keeper. Mosaddek Hossain sets off for the run to get back on strike. Josh Inglis takes aim and throws, but misses the stumps at the batter's end. Hossain had already given up.
FOUR! A freebie! Liam Scott misses the yorker and ends up serving a full toss, outside off. Taskin Ahmed throws his bat at it and slices it over short third for a boundary.
Final over left. Australia have been penalised for a slow-over rate. Meaning, an extra fielder will have to come inside the inner ring for this last over. How many runs can Bangladesh squeeze out? Liam Scott (7-0-44-1) to wrap it up.

FOUR! Salt to the wounds! This is what a dropped catch can cost. Precious runs for the hosts. Overpitched and on middle, in the slot as well. Mosaddek Hossain gets under it and thumps it over the bowler's head for a boundary.
DROPPED! Another chance goes begging! Xavier Bartlett bowls a yorker, on off, Mosaddek Hossain does well to dig out by opening the bat face, but it flies straight to short third. Adam Zampa lets the ball come to him, rather than going forward and grasses it as the ball rolls behind. Two taken. Australia's catching has been well below par in this game.
Hard length and on off, Mosaddek Hossain stabs it to the off side.
Fuller and around off, Mosaddek Hossain shuffles across to play the scoop but misses.
WIDE! Bangs in a bouncer, outside off, too high and wide as well. Mosaddek Hossain lets it go. Wided.
Pitched up and on middle, Taskin Ahmed backs away to smack it but gets an inside edge onto his pads. Mosaddek Hossain calls for the run, while Bartlett also runs towards the ball. He picks up and has a shy at the batter's end but misses, or else Mosaddek would have been a goner. Josh Inglis thinks that Hossain deliberately changed his direction and asks the umpire, but the umpires are happy that it was not the case.
A full toss, on middle, Mosaddek Hossain drills it to long on for a single.
Xavier Bartlett (9-0-53-1) to bowl the penultimate over.

Commentary
That brings this to a close - That's it from this entertaining contest, with Bangladesh clinching a memorable win over Australia. The hosts will now look to seal the series in the next game, while the Aussies will be eager to bounce back and force a decider. We will be back at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka for the 2nd ODI on 11th June, Thursday at 5 am GMT. As always, you can join us early for all the build-up to the game. Until then, cheers and goodbye!
The victorious skipper of Bangladesh - Mehidy Hasan Miraz starts by saying the camp is delighted with how the batting unit performed. He highlights the Shanto and Tanzid partnership as a particular highlight, saying he was genuinely excited watching the two bat together. He does feel the side can do even better, though. But he is quick to credit Mosaddek and Taskin for the way they held their nerve at the back end, saying the two were completely unfazed in the pressure of the closing overs. On Mosaddek specifically, Miraz acknowledges that the comeback has not been easy after such a long absence. He details that the all-rounder responded in the best possible way, showing real character when the team needed it most. As captain, he says, moments like that fill him with genuine pride.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Mosaddek Hossain wins the award for his all-round brilliance on his return to the national team. Unbeaten 86 off 70 with the bat, 2/37 with the ball, and a fantastic catch as well. Mosaddek says that it felt like the same when he was first picked for Bangladesh all those years back. Adds that he has worked hard to get back in the team and is very happy with his performance. Mentions that the conditions were tough, but it was a 320 wicket. However, after losing two wickets, he just tried to back himself and batted the way he did in the Premier League. Hossain shares that it was a good opportunity for him with the ball, but calls his success a bit lucky and thanks the Almighty. Ends by saying that he wants to serve Bangladesh for as long as he plays professional cricket.
The captain of Australia - Josh Inglis admits that they weren't clinical in the field as they dropped several catches. He notes that the chances that went down allowed Bangladesh to post a total that should have been considerably lower and far more manageable to chase. On the bowling, he singles out Ellis for special praise, describing him as outstanding across all phases. He adds that Ellis used his variations smartly, adjusted his fields well and produced a high-quality spell that kept them in the hunt throughout. On the chase, Inglis reflects and details that the message to the batters was simple - to back themselves and play their natural game. He notes the surface offered decent value for batting, but early wickets put the side on the back foot. Highlights that several batters got starts, but none could push on and convert, and the absence of a substantial partnership ultimately proved the difference. Looking ahead, Inglis keeps it brief. He details that the side now has a clearer picture of what these conditions demand, and with the series still alive, he stresses the need to respond immediately.
Presentation Time...
Bangladesh strike, rain steals finish - Bangladesh carried their momentum straight into the bowling innings, with Taskin Ahmed striking on the very first ball of the chase to set the tone instantly. Mustafizur Rahman followed it up right away, keeping the pressure firmly on, and it could have been three early wickets had Tanzid Hasan held on to a chance off Cooper Connolly. After a brief lull, Nahid Rana broke the resistance to form an opening. Mosaddek Hossain, fresh off a valuable fifty, made an impact in the middle overs with a couple of crucial wickets, before Rana stole the show with a brilliant four-wicket haul, ripping through the Australian middle order. Just when Bangladesh were within touching distance of victory, Fizz struck again to leave Australia on the brink. But as the finish approached, lightning and rain forced play to be stopped. In the end, Bangladesh sealed the win via DLS, but were denied that full moment, the chance to finish on the field and celebrate this massive victory in front of their home fans.
Tigers roar as Mosaddek marks dream return - Earlier in the game, Bangladesh posted their fourth-highest ODI total against Australia, courtesy of half-centuries from Najmul Hossain Shanto and Tanzid Hasan. But the standout story was Mosaddek Hossain, who marked his return to international cricket after almost four years in style, smashing a superb unbeaten 86 off 70 deliveries, also his highest ODI score. For Australia, Nathan Ellis led the attack with a fine three-wicket haul, while Matt Renshaw and debutant Liam Scott chipped in with a couple of wickets each. However, Adam Zampa struggled to find his rhythm, and along with a few costly dropped chances in the field, Australia were left chasing a much bigger target than they would have liked.
Aussie batting unravels in Dhaka - Australia got off to a nightmare start, losing Matthew Short on the very first ball, which soon became 2/2 and instantly put them on the back foot. Cooper Connolly and Josh Inglis tried to steady things with a 49-run stand, but the momentum never really shifted. Alex Carey then offered some stability alongside Cooper, who looked to take the innings deep but failed to convert his start. Carey also fell under pressure on 47, and from there it was a rapid collapse. Australia slipped from 128/4 to 140/8 in no time, effectively throwing the game away. Cameron Green held one end with an unbeaten fifty but kept losing partners, never quite able to build a stand. And with lightning and rain bringing play to a halt, Australia were eventually handed an 86-run defeat via DLS, as the weather sealed their fate.
Bangladesh break the 21-year wait - The wait of 21 years is finally over! Bangladesh have sealed only their second-ever ODI win over Australia, with the first coming way back in 2005 in Cardiff, and in the process have taken a 1-0 lead in the series. What a moment in their cricketing history - one that will be remembered for years to come. And they have done it in some style too, producing a dominant all-round performance against an Australian side that, in fairness, were missing a few big names but simply could not capitalise on the moments that came their way.
And that is that. The plug has been pulled after a delay of more than an hour. MATCH HAS BEEN ABANDONED. The two umpires were spotted strolling along the sidelines, sharing a brief word with the ground staff before making their way back in. The result - Bangladesh beat Australia by 86 runs (DLS method). Chasing 285 on a surface like this was a tall order, but Australia's batting frailties in the subcontinent got exposed once again. The conditions asked hard questions, and the answers were not good enough from the tourists.
1.35 pm GMT update - Looks like the rain has picked up and the chances of a resumption are fading fast. There is no movement in the middle whatsoever, and the stands have emptied out too. FYI, this will be Bangladesh's first ODI victory over Australia since that famous day in Cardiff back in 2005. More significantly, it would be their first-ever ODI win against the Aussies on home soil. Whether it comes via DLS or a resumption remains to be seen.
1.25 pm GMT update - A few ground staff remain out on the field without umbrellas, which suggests the drizzle is light enough for now. But even a light drizzle can hang around, and even a gentle shower can delay things far longer than expected. It has already been a very long day in Dhaka, and with time running short, DLS could have the final say if conditions do not clear up soon.
1.18 pm GMT update - Live visuals show that the ground staff are bringing the covers in the middle to protect the pitch. More covers are being rushed out to protect the square, as it has now started to drizzle a bit as well. The break could last a while, it seems. And in just a matter of time, the whole square is under the sheets now.
1.06 pm GMT update - There's some lightning around, and the umpires have decided to take the players off the field as a precautionary measure. Bangladesh are on the cusp of a win but will have to exercise some patience for the final rites.

Drinks! 91/3 has quickly turned into 138/7 for the Aussies as their middle order has been blown away. The game looks beyond the tourists now with most of the mainstays dismissed, but Cameron Green remains at the crease, and the task is clear. Bat deep, shepherd the tail, and at the very least make Bangladesh work hard for every remaining wicket. It's been a fantastic outing for the likes of Rana and Mosaddek, but overall, as well, the bowling from Bangladesh has been clinical so far. Xavier Bartlett is the new batter in at number 9. Nahid Rana to complete the remaining over after the break.

And again! The line is on the leg stump, and it skids through the length. Cooper Connolly tries to clip it into the leg side, but the ball thuds the thigh pad yet again. Decent over from Nahid despite starting with a few looseners.

Fired onto the pads, on a good length. Cooper is hurried on the glance and the ball rolls off the thigh pad to the keeper's right.

Slower one, full and on off, Cooper Connolly presses in front and eases it to backward point.

DROPPED AND FOUR! Not for the first time, we have seen a dropped catch in this match. Mustafizur Rahman hits the length hard and in the channel outside off, shapes it away. Cooper Connolly pushes at it with hard hands and gets a thick outside edge to the right of first slip. Tanzid Hasan is a bit late to react. WIDE! Superb take by the keeper! Good length and around middle and leg, shaping in a long way. Josh Inglis is nowhere near it to glance away, but the ball keeps moving even after going behind the stumps. Litton Das flings himself to his left and grabs it with his outstretched left glove to save four runs for his side.
Dug into the surface and in the channel outside off, holds its line, Josh Inglis lets it go to the keeper.
It has again gotten dark out there. A thick band of cloud is hovering menacingly over the stadium, and it looks ready to burst at any moment. Perfect conditions for the seamers, and Bangladesh have made the most of it so far.

OUT! LBW! A fine review from Bangladesh. Mustafizur Rahman goes full again and on middle, swings it back into the right-hander sharply. Marnus Labuschagne looks to flick it away but misses and gets hit on the pads. There is a huge appeal for LBW from almost every Bangladeshi player, but the finger stays down. However, this one looks close, and if it is pitching in line, then it is plumb, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz takes the review. UltraEdge confirms no bat involved, and Ball Tracking comes up with three reds, with the ball hitting the middle and leg stump. Australia are 2/2 now and in big trouble.

OUT! BOWLED'EM! A dream start for Taskin Ahmed and Bangladesh, sending the crowd into frenzy. Taskin comes over the wicket and lands this on a good length, on off, gets it jag back in sharply. Matthew Short gets stuck in his crease and tries to play at it with a straight, but does so down the wrong line. The ball sneaks through the gap between bat and pad and crashes on the top of the off stump. A golden duck for Short, and Australia are 0/1, chasing 285 runs.
Commentary

Josh Inglis thinks that Hossain deliberately changed his direction and asks the umpire, but the umpires are happy that it was not the case.

That's the end of the Powerplay. Bangladesh will be extremely pleased with where they are right now. Going just a touch above run-a-ball despite losing an early wicket. Barring a few plays and misses early doors, Australia haven't quite troubled the batters often and are searching for another breakthrough. Now then, it is time for Powerplay 2. Australia will be allowed to have a maximum of 4 fielders outside the inner ring for the phase of 11-40 overs. The floodlights are on in Dhaka as it has gotten a lot gloomy out there. Spin introduced with Matthew Short, who replaces Cameron Green.

Length ball outside off and jags away, Shanto reads the line well and leaves.
DROPPED! Labuschagne, the one who took a fantastic catch earlier, has shelled a rather easy one this time around. A shade fuller in length, angling away from the batter. Najmul Hossain Shanto gets on the front foot to play at it, pushing hard, but gets a fat outside edge that goes flat to the slip cordon. Marnus Labuschagne from second slip, dives to his right, gets both hands to it, but spills the chance. It was at a catchable height as well, but he couldn't cling on.

Early blow for Bangladesh. Najmul Hossain Shanto walks out to bat at number 3.
OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Ellis with an instant comeback and Bangladesh's opening stand lasts just 8 balls. Nathan corrects his line and length this time around. This is full, closer to the off pole with a hint of away shape. Saif Hassan is forced to play with the angle. Tries to defend, but is squared up and that ekes out a thick outside edge that goes low to the right of the second slip. Marnus Labuschagne is watchful there, dives to his right and grabs it one-handed inches above the ground. Spectacular catch from Marnus. Not much impact from Saif and Bangladesh are 10/1.

A muted appeal for LBW, but the umpire walks away. Curves in on the leg stump line, perhaps pitching outside leg on a fuller length. Hasan misses the flick and is struck on the front pad. Bartlett looks interested, but gets no support from elsewhere. Australia do not review. So 5 runs from the first over. Neat start from Bartlett.
FOUR! Solid shot! Slightly fuller from Xavier, but he doesn't get much movement this time around, on off. Tanzid Hasan gets a good stride in and plays with a straight bat, driving it neatly past mid off's left for a cracking boundary.
In and around the off stump line, on a good length, curving in a shade. Tanzid Hasan plays from the crease and blocks it out to the leg side.

Another one that moves away from the batter, full and around off, Saif Hassan gets on the front foot and knocks it to the mid off region. Played more off the inner half of the bat.
Bartlett is on the money! Gets a good bit of away shape from off, on a fuller length. Saif Hassan covers the line and watchfully blocks it off the back foot.
All in readiness now! The two umpires walk out to the middle, while the Aussies get into a huddle. They spread out and take up the fielding spots. Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan are the two openers for Bangladesh. Xavier Bartlett has the new ball in his hand and is raring to go under overcast conditions.
We are moments away from the start of the match, but before that, as tradition, the players from both sides make their way out to the middle and line up for their respective national anthems. It will be Australia's first, followed by that of Bangladesh.
Time to listen to Marnus Labuschagne - About the challenges coming to Bangladesh, he admits that Bangladesh presents a fresh set of challenges, with many in the group unfamiliar with these conditions. Notes that the focus is on learning quickly and reading what the surface has to offer, while the opposition and the goals remain well understood. He adds that the senior players carry a responsibility to lead from the front in that regard, setting the tone in terms of adaptability and reading the game situation early. On the Pakistan series, Labuschagne reflects that despite the defeat, there were plenty of positives to take, with the side doing a lot of things right along the way. He details that this is a fresh opportunity and one the group is eager to grab with both hands from ball one.
Coach's word - Bangladesh's Head Coach, Phil Simmons, is up for a quick chat. He says that all the series are important to them. The ones they played against New Zealand and Pakistan were too, as they are preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Reckons that they need to keep improving and keep moving forward. Says that the domestic competitions are also going on, so the players are playing. Simmons shares that it is pleasing to see Bangladesh play with three seamers. The batters are doing well as well, and the important thing is that they are enjoying themselves.
PITCH REPORT - Brad Hogg is pitchside and gives his analysis. He describes the pitch as one of the hardest and most grass-covered pitches he has seen at the venue, with conditions clearly offering plenty of seam movement and extra bounce. He notes that Bangladesh's pace attack is well-equipped to exploit these conditions, which will make life difficult for the batters. Hogg adds that there is very little dryness on the surface, meaning spinners are unlikely to get much traditional turn. However, they can still remain in the contest through skid and extra bounce, provided they are accurate. He also points out that shot selection will be crucial, with sweep shots particularly risky due to the chance of top edges because of the bounce. Overall, he views it as an excellent surface for competitive cricket, where seamers are expected to dominate early while disciplined spin can still have an impact as the game progresses.
Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Saif Hassan, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Litton Das (WK), Towhid Hridoy, Mosaddek Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz (C), Tanvir Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman and Nahid Rana.
Australia (Playing XI) - Matthew Short, Cooper Connolly, Josh Inglis (C/WK), Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Matt Renshaw, Liam Scott (On ODI debut), Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa.
The captain of Bangladesh - Mehidy Hasan Miraz says the excitement in the camp is real, backed by a strong run of results across the last two to three series. He adds that confidence is high in both the batting and bowling departments heading into this challenge. On the pitch, he notes that the surface looks good and, having played here recently in both international and domestic cricket, gives them an edge. He details that posting a strong first innings score will be the priority. About the team combination, Miraz informs that they have three fast bowlers, three spinners, six batters and two all-rounders. He feels that they have a really good combination and is confident with his team.
The captain of Australia - Josh Inglis says that the reasons for his decision to bowl first is due to the unknown conditions here and also they saw a bit of moisture and nip around early in the New Zealand series so they want to exploit it. Inglis mentions that it is all about adapting to the conditions early and communicating with the group. Reckons they have had a couple of good training sessions and are ready for the challenge. Informs that Xavier Bartlett is back in the side and also Liam Scott is making his debut, calling him an exciting prospect.
TOSS - Both captains are out in the middle for the coin flip, and the good news is that the sun is out now, though there is a bit of cloud cover around and conditions are muggy. Mehidy gives it a flick and Inglis calls it correctly. Australia have elected to BOWL first.
Weather conditions and pitch expectations - The overcast conditions expected throughout the day could bring seam movement into play early, making the new ball period particularly challenging for the openers. Clouds tend to do funny things to a moving ball, and if the seamers find assistance in the air, the Powerplay could set the tone for everything that follows. Rain and thunderstorms are also on the cards, but let's hope we get a complete game of cricket in this exciting series opener. Toss and teams up next very shortly. Stay tuned.
Pace to have a say? Usually, when you hear Bangladesh, the first thing that comes to mind is spinners. How many are playing? Bangladesh and spin have always gone together like tea and rain. But things have been different this year. Dhaka has hosted five of the five ODIs in 2026 so far, and the pacers have outshone the spinners by quite a distance. The tally reads 55 wickets by pacers as compared to spin’s 21. If that is the case here, emerging paceman Nahid Rana will be a real handful. He has claimed 14 wickets at this venue in 2026 alone, the most by any bowler, and he will have the experienced Taskin and Mustafizur alongside him, two bowlers who bring their own bag of tricks. For the Aussies, the likes of Ellis and Dwarshuis will come into focus to lead the charge. A pace-heavy contest might actually suit the tourists just fine, after weeks of grinding through the low and slow surfaces they endured in Pakistan. But you just can’t rule out spin in Bangladesh.
Depleted visitors, determined hosts - A bruising series defeat in Pakistan, and now straight to Dhaka with a squad that is anything but full strength. And for all the cricket these two nations have played, this remains only the third time the Aussies have toured this region for ODIs, following trips in 2006 and 2011. The head-to-head record is as one-sided as it gets. 20 wins from 21 completed games, and just a solitary defeat. The hosts have been a different beast at home in recent times in white-ball cricket. But Australia remain the one team they simply have not cracked on their own turf, losing all six ODIs played here. The only time Bangladesh ever beat them was in 2005, and it was not in Dhaka or Sydney but in Cardiff, of all places. Ricky Ponting, at his prime, was leading Australia then. Habibul Bashar had the armband for the hosts. So the wait has been long enough and the hosts would aim to end it this time around.
A long wait comes to an end - New day. Fresh series from a different part of the world. Time moves, cricket moves, and somehow the world keeps spinning along with both. But who’s complaining, eh? After 15 long years, the Kangaroos have hopped into the Tigers’ territory once again. The next ODI World Cup is a year and a half away, and this three-match contest in the cauldron of Dhaka is another vital stride towards it for both sides. Hello and welcome to our coverage of the first of the three ODIs between Bangladesh and Australia at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka.
... MATCH DAY ...
The Asian journey continues - Month number 6 and Australia are still in Asia! Well, not all, but quite a few of them have been playing a lot of cricket in the Asian subcontinent. It began in January, as a precursor warm-up type for the T20 World Cup, when the Aussies embarked on a 3-match T20I tour of Pakistan. That was followed by a trip to Sri Lanka to play the World Cup, and unfortunately, could not progress to play in India for the same tournament, as they got knocked out in the first round itself. But then came the IPL on Indian shores and the next 2 months went over there only. Further, they returned to Pakistan to complete their white-ball tour of January, this time for a longer version of ODIs. And finally, they come to the last stop, a 6-match white-ball tour of Bangladesh. Dare we say, this might be their biggest trek in Asia ever! Easier series? Don't even think about it. If you are looking at the rankings and sum up that okay, number 9 is hosting a number 3, then let's just remind you that just like age, ranking is just a number. You can just cast a look back at Sunday's French Open final and marvel at how a lower-ranked player took Sasha Zverev to the hilt. Sticking to cricket, Bangladesh have not lost an ODI series at home since 2024. The opponents have been Sri Lanka, West Indies, Pakistan and New Zealand. Enough data to say that the Tigers are roaring in their own habitat. Kangaroos hopping out? Well, that's what it seems like.No Mitchell Marsh (ankle injury). No Travis Head (personal reasons). No Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood (workload management). Plainly put, with ultimate respect, this seems like an impoverished Aussie side, leading to a foregone conclusion of another Bangla home win. Talking about the hosts themselves, they look strong as ever, especially at home, with the likes of skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das in impeccable form. Additionally, after a fairly indifferent past few months, Mustafizur Rahman is finding his mojo back while Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam are growing in stature. And yes, don't forget Nahid Rana, who is quickly becoming an all-format star. Another spin test? The temptation would be really high. After watching The Team In Yellow fizz out against spin in Pakistan, that too, against newcomers, Bangladesh would be tempted to put them further under mire. So don't be surprised if you get a Benson and Burner's deck. Batting first has been significantly tough in this country and now, with the matches being shifted to daytime to save electricity, the essence of spin and slowing down of the decks is even more pronounced. However, Bangladesh themselves have shown that if you have quality, battle the conditions early on and spend some time on the wicket, you can produce big scores. Does Australia's so-called bench possess that quality? From what we have seen so far, not just in alien conditions but even at home, it has primarily been the seniors who have been contributing. So in terms of seniority for this series, there will be added responsibility on the likes of Josh Inglis, Matthew Short, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa, but it is also another opportunity for the juniors to show that they can belong at this level. 2011 - The last time Australia toured Bangladesh for an ODI series. They played a Test series in 2017 and a T20I series in 2021, but it will be fair enough to say that 2011 was the last occasion when a full-strength Aussie side played cricket on these shores. One can understand Bangladesh being miffed about oppositions not sending full-strength sides to their country (New Zealand too, sent a second-string side), but that cannot be their problem. You play the sport, not the opposition. A perk awaiting them is a 2-match Test tour of Australia, later this year, their first ever down Under since 2003. So not just a series win here, but a whitewash might force teams across the world to take the so-called 'Asian minnows' a bit more seriously. And what is now a one-off series here and there in other countries might become a full-fledged tour in the coming future. Respite from the heat? It seems like the whole world is suffering a heat wave. However, the forecast for Tuesday in Mirpur shows early morning showers and a few intermittent ones in the afternoon. While that might interrupt the game and we might be in danger of a shortened contest, it could give the players some much-needed respite from the heat.

FIFTY FOR CAMERON GREEN! Off 64 balls, and it has come against the odds. That's his 4th ODI fifty as well. Not a huge celebration from him, though. Short and around off. 84.6 kph. Green nudges it down to deep mid-wicket for a single. It might have come in a losing cause, but it's been a truly fighting knock from him. The dug out also rises to applause for his effort.
