Commentary

That's a wrap - That is all from us from Sabina Park, where Sri Lanka have bounced back in style to level the three-match T20I series against West Indies. With the series now locked at 1-1, everything comes down to the decider on 14th June, Sunday, right here in Kingston, Jamaica. The final T20I is scheduled to begin at 12.30 am GMT, with both sides having one last shot at claiming the series. Join us then for what promises to be a thrilling finish. Until next time, goodbye and take care!

The victorious skipper of Sri Lanka - Kusal Mendis praises his batting unit. First, he starts with Dunit's performance, the way he batted and put the pressure on the opposition really helped the team to post a good total on the board. Then he shifts to Kamil's innings, who played an anchor role for them, which is equally important for them. On being asked about their impactful changes in the playing XI, he says that they wanted to bring the lefty-righty combination in the middle order and that is the reason why they brought Kamil into the team. On being asked about the decider match, Mendis says that they will be ready to face the Windies. They will look forward to keeping things simple and playing basic cricket.

The captain of West Indies - On his stunning catch to dismiss Pavan Rathnayake, Shai Hope says the ball was heading to his right and he simply threw out a hand, with the catch sticking neatly. Assessing the defeat, he feels the West Indies fell short in execution despite having clear plans coming into the game. He admits the bowlers leaked a few extra runs but also believes the batters should have taken more responsibility during the chase. He adds that there are areas the team can improve on and that they will look to address them ahead of the next match. On chasing targets of 160 or more, he stresses the importance of playing to strengths while also adapting to the match situation. He feels the side has enough experience and quality, and that the issue is not poor batting but rather understanding key moments and executing better under pressure. Looking ahead to the final T20I, his message to the team is straightforward: go out and win the game.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Dasun Shanaka wins the award for his superb knock of 58 off 24. He starts off saying that this knock was very special for him as they wanted to keep the series alive, and he is happy that they got the win. On his batting approach, he says that from the moment he stepped onto the crease, he wanted to change the momentum of the game. He was asked to play normal cricket shots, and he tried to listen to the coaches' advice. He also adds that Kamil Mishara did extremely well, hitting a couple of boundaries, which made his job easier, and overall, it was a good game of cricket for them.

Presentation Time...

Sri Lanka seize control with the ball - Sri Lanka will be delighted with their bowling display. Dushmantha Chameera and Dunith Wellalage struck early before a chaotic spell, featuring missed chances off Rovman Powell and Shimron Hetmyer, threatened to shift the momentum. However, Pavan Rathnayake's brilliant run out proved a turning point, allowing the spinners to take over. Wanindu Hasaranga picked up 3/38, Maheesh Theekshana removed Powell, and Chameera capped off a superb outing with 3/9 to help level the series.

From collapse to comeback - Earlier in the game, Sri Lanka posted a big total after stumbling to 43/3. It was the 103-run fifth-wicket partnership between Dasun Shanaka and Kamil Mishara that boosted the innings, with both getting to fiery fifties. Shamar Joseph was the pick of the bowlers with a three-fer, while Matthew Forde got a couple and Shamar Springer got one, but they leaked a bit too many at the death.

A chase unraveled - West Indies got off to the worst possible start, losing both openers inside two overs. However, then Rovman Powell and Shimron Hetmyer launched a counter-attack. They did have some luck and made it count by putting together an 81-run stand, but Hettie's run out unraveled the chase, as both got out in the same over and it was a big collapse after that as they went from 108/4 to 122/8. Akeal Hosein and Shamar Joseph did hit a few lusty blows but that was never going to be enough.

We are going to a decider - A dominating performance from Sri Lanka and they have made it 1-1 in the series by completely outplaying the hosts. It is also a big confidence boost for the Lankans as they have broken a four-match losing streak in T20Is. West Indies did have their moments, both with bat and ball, but they just could not handle the pressure and will now have to look at a few things before the final game.

OUT! TAKEN! A wonderful catch taken by Kamindu Mendis and West Indies have been bowled out, scoring 157 runs. Sri Lanka beat West Indies by 37 runs. Dushmantha Chameera comes around the wicket and bowls on a good length, angling across. Roston Chase opens his stance and heaves it across the line. However, Chase gets the height more than the distance and the ball balloons toward the deep mid-wicket region, where Kamindu Mendis moves to his right and takes an excellent diving catch.

Commentary

We are back for West Indies' replay with the bat. The players have already entered the field. Brandon King and Shai Hope will open the inning for the Windies. Dunith Wellalage will start things off with the ball for the Lankans. Away we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Exciting chase on the cards - Well, if we turn some pages of the history book, it says that 194 is the highest successful run chase on this ground, and it was the Windies who did it against India back in 2017. Today, they will look forward to breaking the record and chasing this 195-run target. Stay tuned for the second inning.

Dasun powers Lanka's fightback - Just when the innings threatened to unravel completely, Kamindu Mendis and Kamil Mishara forged a timely 45-run partnership to steady the ship and breathe life back into Sri Lanka's total. When Kamindu fell, Dasun Shanaka stepped in and took on the mantle with equal conviction. Mishara continued to punish anything loose, eventually bringing up his fourth T20I half-century, while Shanaka matched him stride for stride with a stunning fifty off just 20 balls. The two batters remained inseparable right through to the final over, stitching together a magnificent 103-run partnership that utterly transformed the complexion of the innings and propelled Sri Lanka to a highly formidable total.

Dasun Shanaka is up for chat - Shanaka says that they had the discussion to finish the innings well, and the coach has given him enough clarity, and is happy that he and Mishara could take it deep. Adds that the wicket was a bit two-paced in the initial stages, but today he needed to change the momentum and pre-empted the type of deliveries that were going to be bowled.

The Windies bowlers make early inroads - Sri Lanka, after being asked to bat first, got off to a promising start, huge thanks to their captain, Kusal Mendis, who looked in breathtaking touch from the start. However, Pathum Nissanka's departure triggered an alarming collapse. From a healthy 40 for no loss in the fifth over, Sri Lanka lost three wickets in three consecutive overs, with Matthew Forde, Shamar Joseph, and Shamar Springer all striking in quick succession to leave the Lankans reeling.

A titanic effort from the Lankans - What a remarkable turnaround we witnessed from Sri Lanka's middle order. The Windies held better control through the first ten overs, but the moment the game entered its second phase, the script was flipped entirely. Sri Lanka's middle order batters took the attack to the opposition, batting with freedom and flair to haul their side to an imposing total of 194.

OUT! TIMBER! Shamar Joseph wrestles back some momentum for West Indies with a stellar final over as Sri Lanka finish with 194/6 on the board. Shamar goes full and angles it just across off. It is a low full toss and Dunith Wellalage shuffles to the off side, looking to help it past short fine leg, but misses. The ball goes off the pads and onto the stumps and just one bail slowly falls off. Shamar is appealing for LBW but he later realizes that the batter has been bowled out.

19.51

A low full toss, darted across off, Kamil Mishara reaches out and pings the punch to deep cover for a single.

19.40

That's perfection from Joseph. Full and wide outside off, lands it just inside the tramline again and Kamil Mishara is unable to get bat to ball.

19.41wd

WIDE! Shamar Joseph gets away with a really poor delivery. Full again, and wide outside off, lands beyond the tramline and even beyond the cut strip. But because the ball was past the stumps before it landed, it will be just a wide and not a No Ball.

19.30

Just inside the tramline. Very full and angled across off, Kamil Mishara fails to reach it.

19.21

Very full on the pads, clipped away to deep mid-wicket for a single.

Dunith Wellalage is the next batter at the crease.

19.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! Finally, some respite for West Indies. Shamar Joseph goes pace on, bowling it full and at the toes. Dasun Shanaka leans on to flick but ends up spooning it a bit. The ball goes high towards cow corner, where Shimron Hetmyer runs to his left from deep mid-wicket and gobbles up the catch. End of a momentum-shifting innings from Shanaka.

Shamar Joseph to bowl the final over.

FOUR! How's that ended there? Fuller in length, attacking the stumps. Kamil Mishara looks to reverse flick, but sees the ball agling in and leaves the bat face open towards the other side. The ball gets scooped over short fine leg for a boundary.

18.31

Back of a length and outside off, Shanaka hangs back and goes after it but slices it high around the point region. Roston Chase takes the catch, but it won't count and the batters get a single.

18.35nb

NO BALL AND FOUR! Oh, the Windies bowling attack has crumbled completely under pressure, and that is a howler from Shamar Springer. A chest height full toss outside off. Dasun Shanaka goes after it and ends up slicing it all the way over deep third for a six. Free Hit loading...

18.22

Shorter now and outside off, slashed away to deep backward point for a couple of runs.

18.16

SIX! This has been a real blitz from Dasun Shanaka and he brings up his FIFTY off just 19 deliveries. Springer misses the yorker and serves it in the slot around off. Dasun walks inside the line and clobbers it a long, long way over the long on fence for a mammoth six.

Who will bowl the penultimate over? Shamar Springer it is.

17.56

SIX! Dasun Shanaka only wants to deal in sixes right now. Around the wicket again, dug in short on leg, a bit slower too. Shanaka gets inside the line and climbs into the pull, nailing it deep into the stands over the fine leg fence.

17.41

Yorker-length delivery speared across off, Mishara reaches out and cue-ends it to short third for a quick single.

17.34

FOUR! Shepherd switches back to over the wicket, but it doesn't matter. Full and straight, Mishara backs away and pummels it back over the umpire's head for a boundary.

17.26

SIX! Right into the swinging arc and Kamil Mishara brings up his FIFTY in style. Short-pitched delivery, angled in from around the wicket. Mishara is ready for it, and he swivels back before nailing the pull just in front of deep square leg for a biggie.

17.11

Full-pitched delivery around off, Dasun Shanaka gets across to lap but miscues it on the bounce to short fine leg for a single.

DRINKS! This wicket also allows the umpire to call for DRINKS. Sri Lanka have finally managed to break the threatening 81-run stand and will now look to build on it. Shimron Hetmyer did not really make the most of his charmed life, but he, along with Rovman Powell, has set up a platform for the big chase. They need to avoid losing wickets in clusters now. Also, Sherfane Rutherford is the next man in.

All in readiness for the game to begin! The umpires are out in the middle and the players of West Indies have taken their places on the field. It will be the duo of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis to open the innings for Sri Lanka. Akeal Hosein will take the new ball, as he often does in this format. Let's play...

West Indies (Playing XI) - Brandon King, Shai Hope (C/WK), Shimron Hetmyer, Roston Chase, Sherfane Rutherford, Rovman Powell, Romario Shepherd, Shamar Springer (In for Jason Holder), Matthew Forde, Akeal Hosein, and Shamar Joseph.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (C/WK), Kamil Mishara (In for Lasith Croospulle), Pavan Rathnayake, Kamindu Mendis, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage (In for Dilshan Madushanka), Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera, and Eshan Malinga.

The skipper of Sri Lanka - Kusal Mendis says that they bowled well in the last game, especially the spinners and will look to continue in the same way. On the batting, he says that they lost their way after the Powerplay and will look to rectify that. Informs that they have made a couple of changes as the likes of Dunith Wellalage and Kamil Mishara come into the playing XI.

The captain of West Indies - Shai Hope says that they are going to bowl first as they will have a good chance for chase. On being asked about the changes in the playing XI, he says that Jason Holder makes way for Shamar Springer and adds that it’s a slight tactical chance. Hope ends up saying that Jason brings more experience to the game but they will see to it how Springer's introduction affects the team.

TOSS - West Indies elect to BOWL first.

A tricky surface on offer - With Sabina Park already hosting a plethora of matches to kick off the Windies summer of cricket, the pitch might be a bit sluggish and the batters will have to adapt quickly if they are to score big. This is where someone like Shai Hope could once again be the difference between the two sides, given his tactical astuteness. Both teams also have an in-form bowling attack, so it should be an exciting watch. Stay tuned for the toss and team news.

Take 2 - Hello, and a warm welcome to one and all. We are back at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica for the 2nd T20I between West Indies and Sri Lanka. The hosts have a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and will be looking to seal the series right here, right now. The Lankans on the other hand will look to improve with the bat and try to level things up.

... MATCHDAY ...

Deciding the series flow - The action is back at Kingston, Jamaica, as West Indies take on Sri Lanka in the 2nd T20I of this three-match series. The Windies brushed aside the Lankans in game 1, but Sri Lanka will be eager to answer back. As the teams return to Sabina Park for the second T20I, the equation is straightforward - West Indies have the opportunity to seal the series with a game to spare, while Sri Lanka face a must-win contest to force a decider. The pressure, therefore, sits firmly on the visitors, whose batting unit once again struggled to convert promising phases into a commanding total. Getting the job done - For West Indies, the first T20I represented a continuation of a template they have increasingly relied upon in home conditions - aggressive seam bowling upfront, athletic fielding, and enough lower-middle-order power to control a chase. While the batting did not explode in trademark Caribbean fashion, the composure of Shai Hope stood out. Traditionally viewed as an accumulator in white-ball cricket, Hope adapted neatly to conditions, pacing the innings intelligently and ensuring Sri Lanka never regained control after the hosts negotiated the Powerplay. His presence lends balance to a batting order filled with naturally aggressive hitters, allowing players like Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell the freedom to attack without carrying the burden of anchoring the innings. The bowling performance, however, may have pleased West Indies management even more. The pace battery extracted enough assistance from the Sabina Park surface to keep the visitors under pressure, while disciplined variations at the death ensured Sri Lanka failed to breach the psychologically important 160-mark. In modern T20 cricket, totals below 150 often become near-impossible to defend. The need to step up - For Sri Lanka, the concern is not merely defeat, but the manner in which their innings unfolded. There were moments of promise - Kusal Mendis looked fluent during his stay, and Kamindu Mendis briefly threatened to accelerate, but the innings lacked sustained intent. Too many batters appeared caught between accumulation and aggression, a dangerous middle ground in T20 cricket. On surfaces where stroke-making is possible once batters settle, Sri Lanka cannot afford another conservative approach, especially against a West Indies side capable of chasing modest targets without panic. The visitors must find a way to maximize the Powerplay while also preserving wickets for an explosive finish. Their bowling unit, meanwhile, remains their strongest suit despite the opening defeat. Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dushmantha Chameera still provide variety and wicket-taking threat across all phases. The challenge in the first game was not necessarily execution, but the scoreboard pressure, or lack thereof. Defending 147 inevitably reduced attacking options, forcing bowlers into containment rather than aggression. Sri Lanka’s attack becomes considerably more dangerous if they have 170-plus to work with, especially under lights, where grip and movement can occasionally emerge later in the innings. What's the pitch saying? The venue offers another fascinating tactical layer. Sabina Park has historically produced competitive T20 surfaces with assistance for pace bowlers early on, before flattening out as the match progresses. Seamers have often enjoyed greater impact than spinners at the venue, although quality slow bowling remains effective through variation rather than turn. Teams generally prefer clarity at the toss as chasing can become slightly easier due to improved batting conditions and potential dew, but totals around 175 have often proven competitive if bowlers execute smartly. Another score in the 140s could once again leave the defending side vulnerable. Final thoughts - Sri Lanka should improve with the bat after the lessons of the opening game, but West Indies currently appear the more settled T20 unit in home conditions. The hosts possess greater finishing power, familiarity with the surface, and the confidence of already having exposed Sri Lanka’s vulnerabilities. Unless the visitors produce a significantly improved batting performance, West Indies will begin the second T20I as slight favourites to clinch the series. Who do you think will reign victorious?
